Broker Licensing Requirements
New broker licensing requirements went into effect on October 16th 2017. Applicants for a broker’s license will be required to complete 90 hours of education approved by the R.I. Department of Business Regulation AND work full-time as a salesperson for two years immediately before applying for a license.
Buying or selling a home or other real estate is likely to be the largest investment that most Rhode Islanders will make in their lifetime. Real estate brokers are legally responsible for assisting members of the public; managing others who do this work; and for holding thousands of dollars of clients’ deposits in an escrow account.
The Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation has approved over 60 courses offered by RI REALTORS® to count toward the required 90 hours of broker education. Added together, these account for 327 hours of approved continuing education (CE) that is accepted by the state to fulfill the 90 hours requirement, more than any other approved real estate school in RI. Without a commitment to certain, days, times, you are able to pick and choose from these approved CE courses which vary in time and duration to accommodate your schedule. In addition, these classes not only count toward the broker 90, but may also be taken to earn CE’s for salesperson and broker license renewal and count toward nationally recognized designations and certifications.
It is imperative that if you are considering obtaining broker licensure, that you familiarize yourself with:
