Get your real estate career started in 5 steps with RI REALTORS®
Step 1: Complete Sales Pre-licensing Education.
RI REALTORS® offers a comprehensive 45-hour program that meets the RI Department of Business Regulation (DBR) guidelines and prepares you to pass the licensing exams. In RI, it is required to take these courses live (either virtually or in person). With RI REALTORS® you can choose between in-person options (East Greenwich, Cranston or Middletown/Newport) or virtually via Zoom from the comfort of your home. Our course is designed to build upon concepts introduced in the preceding class and follow a traditional 15-class syllabus (classes meet twice a week for 3 hours each class) with a specific start and end date ensuring maximum results to get you to pass your exams on your first try.
Step 2: Complete a 3-hour Lead Paint Hazards & Mitigation course.
Students enrolled in RI REALTORS® Sales Pre-license program save $15 on our live or pre-recorded Lead Paint Hazard course.
Step 3: Pass the Rhode Island Sales Person National and State Law Examinations.
Upon completing the 45 hours of Sales Pre License, there are 2 examinations (National/General and RI Real Estate Law) that you would schedule with Pearson VUE. Each exam is $50 and you must pass with a 70% or higher. RI REALTORS® students get access to a variety of practice quizzes, study tools, eLearning reviews, and more to help you prepare. Learn everything you need to know about the examination process in the Candidate Handbook at Pearson VUE.
Step 4: Find your Brokerage
Finding a Real Estate broker is a crucial step in the licensing process. Learn the questions you should be asking and how to find the best fit for your career goals.
Not sure where to start? Students in our program are provided with a list of brokers who are members of the RI Association of REALTORS® and are eager to work with new licensees.
Step 5: Apply for your License
All RI real estate professionals are licensed by the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation (DBR). An application signed by the applicant and principal broker, where you will hang your real estate license, is required. In addition to the items in steps 1 – 3, you must include the following.
- Broker signature on application.
- Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI) background check from the Rhode Island Office of the Attorney General
- Errors & Omissions Insurance
- Fees to the RI General Treasurer and Real Estate Recovery Account.
You can find the Sales Person application on the State's website, where additional information, including fees, can be found.
