Michael Young, 2005 RIAR President

Michael Thomas Young, 79, was a great friend, businessman, scholar, devoted husband, caring father, and loving grandfather. His kindness, good humor, and kinship made all feel welcome and seen in his company. Michael died peacefully on May 4, 2024, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer.

A long time resident of Providence, Rhode Island, and recent resident of Matunuck, Rhode Island, Michael was the son of Dr. Daniel D. Young and Pauline A. Young. He was born in Providence, spending his earliest years on Francis Street, upstairs from his father’s medical practice. The family relocated to Warwick Neck, where they enjoyed a stately home. Years later, the Youngs returned to Francis Street. Michael attended Henry Barnard School and Classical High School before attending Brown University. At Brown, Michael studied International Relations and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, where he made a number of lifelong friends.

Upon graduating from Brown in 1966, Michael chose to enroll at the US Naval War College in Newport, RI, where he studied to become a commissioned officer in the Navy. Shortly after completing his studies, Michael was assigned to the USS Forrest Royal, a Gearing-class destroyer, and sailed to Vietnam in 1967. Upon returning from Vietnam, Michael was stationed in Mayport, Florida, where he met his wife of 53 years, Bonnye Elaine Coleman. Michael left the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. Bonnye and he married in 1970, and the two relocated to Philadelphia, PA, where Michael enrolled at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, earning an M.B.A. in International Business.

Following business school, Michael and Bonnye relocated to Warwick, RI, where Michael started his career at Industrial National Bank (which became Fleet Bank). During his twenty-year career at Fleet Bank, Michael rose to Vice President, leading the London office twice before settling permanently in Rhode Island. Michael left Fleet Bank in 1990 when he became President and owner of Coleman Realtors with partners David Coleman and Bob Swift. Michael loved being a small business owner and building Coleman Realtors to be a top firm in the state. He also had the privilege of serving as the President of the Rhode Island Association of Realtors in 2005 — a post that earned him the Lear Award for leadership and community involvement from the Greater Providence Board of Realtors. In 2016, Michael and David sold Coleman to Mott & Chace Sotheby's International, where Michael's daughter, Sarah Collins, works today. In addition to his professional endeavors, Michael gave his time as a trustee at Trinity Repertory Company and on the Board of Governors at The Dunes Club.

Michael was a world traveler who visited many destinations across the globe while always having a special affinity for London — the city, the people, the food, the culture, and, of course, the bitter. He was an impressive intellect with a passion for history and world events. He was an avid reader of The New York Times, The Financial Times, and The Economist. He enjoyed the Beatles, Paul Simon, and British marching bands. He loved the Saab 900. Lunch was his favorite meal, preferably with friends and a glass of unoaked chardonnay, and he possessed the most amazing ability to remember numbers in series and an even more impressive ability to add or multiply them with remarkable speed and accuracy.

Michael loved the Rhode Island coastline, whether from his childhood home in Warwick Neck, the bridge of a destroyer, the helm of a day boat, or the deck of his favorite place on earth — The Dunes Club. Michael was drawn to the ocean and found peace and joy amidst salty air and crashing waves. Michael will be remembered for his kindness, his wry sense of humor, and the wonderful and permanent connections he made with so many people throughout his life.

Michael is survived by his wife, Bonnye; his sister, Suzanne Young Murray, and brother, Daniel Young; his children, Scott and Sarah and their spouses, Katie Young and Tim Collins, respectively; his four grandchildren, Peter Young, Jackson Collins, Caroline Young, and Hunter Collins; and his beloved dog, Zuzu. His sister, Paula Andrew, predeceased him.

The family would like to thank friends and family who visited during the final months and hospice nurses and social workers who supported Michael and the family throughout. A celebration of life will be held at The Dunes Club in Narragansett, RI, on Thursday, May 30. Public visiting hours will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with a private event to follow. James Moriarty - Father of Jamie Moore, Jamie Moore Appraisal Services

James Francis Moriarty, Jr., 87, died peacefully and prayerfully on May 22, 2023, with his wife, family and Reverend Joseph Tito by his side. Jim was the husband of Carol Ann (Kress) and a beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Jim was born in White Plains, NY on February 04, 1936. He is the son of Elizabeth (Hummel) and James Francis Moriarty, Sr. An only child, he was proud to be a part of the Matt “Moriarty Brothers” family. A scholar/athlete graduate from College of the Holy Cross, he then attended Central Connecticut State College for his teaching certification. It was there that he met Carol.

Always true to his commitments, Jim married the Love of his Life on August 20, 1960, at Saint Mark’s Church in West Hartford and then promptly brought her to Colt’s Park so she could watch him play in his team’s playoff baseball game on their wedding night.

Jim always strived to raise the bar. A history teacher at Illing Junior High School in Manchester for more than 30 years, he was respected by all and feared by some. Jim had the ability to coax his students to “dress up” when that was not the norm – and we are talking 1970’s!!! Those who read this and know Mr. Moriarty are aware of what “ties and skirts” meant when it was quiz day.

He coached the Manchester High School Basketball Team for decades. We doubt there is another coach in Connecticut – or maybe anywhere – that had their toenails surgically removed because they kicked the lockers so many times while trying to encourage his players…. His basketball players reading this will have a good laugh…. And remember that he walked around after that “operation” for months with sneakers that had cut-out toes.

Jim’s passion was his love of Golf. He was a proud member of Manchester Country Club as well as a Past President. He won his share of Tournaments and experienced the elusive Hole in One. He told his grandson 20 years ago – “If I had only one week to live, I guess I would play a lot of golf”. And “Yes, I believe that the afterlife for me is a 36-hole golf course with the best greens in the world”.

Aside from his Love for 62 years of marriage, Jim is survived by his son, James Michael Moriarty and his daughter, Jamie (Moriarty) Moore, as well as his son-in-law Brian. He is blessed with granddaughter Brittany and her husband Brian (Dawson) and their three sons: Everett, Levi and Abram. Jim is further blessed with grandson Connor, his wife Stephanie and their son Waylon, as well as another child to soon come.

Calling hour will be held from 9:00-10:00 am on Saturday, June 3rd, 2023, at John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center Street, Manchester. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 am at St. James Church, 896 Main Street, Manchester. For online condolences, please visit www.tierneyfuneralhome.com.

Patricia "Patsy" Ewenson - REALTOR®

Patricia "Patsy" Ewenson, 77, passed away peacefully in her Newport home on Saturday, October 9th, 2021. She now joins her recently deceased husband, Geoffrey Ewenson.

Born in Newport to Helen (Kelly) Dwyer and Timothy Dwyer, she was the fourth of nine children. She spent most of her childhood growing up on Conanicus Ave. and attended St. Catherine's Academy. She took tremendous pride in the large family she came from and enjoyed a childhood where waterskiing off 3rd Beach, sailing in Newport Harbor, and ice skating on the Big Pond with her brothers, sisters, and cousins was commonplace. She attended the Elms College and received a degree in education.

Patsy met Geoff in the summer of 1967, and they quickly committed their lives to each other, living in New Jersey, Ohio, Illinois, and New York, but eventually settled in her native Newport. She was a fierce advocate and supporter of her children's education, but her commitment to their athletic pursuits was more obvious. Their passion for competitive sailing led to her own passion to support it. She was Ida Lewis Yacht Club's Junior Program Chair for many years and did race committee work for countless regattas.

The family house on Kay Street housed sailing instructors every summer, and became a regular refuge for those coming to town for regattas. It was also the obvious place for the large family gatherings; she played hostess for most Thanksgivings, Easters, and police parades. She loved bringing people together, and though she sometimes complained about it, she embraced the circus-like atmosphere..

Patsy was an incredibly loyal friend and family member. Multiple generations sought her company and council because of her genuine personality and authenticity. She did not mince words, but her directness was balanced with a true compassion, a sense of humor, and openness. Many could claim that Patsy took them in as her own son or daughter, whether that was a niece, a friend of a son, a coworker, or a young couple she sold a house to. She had a lot of love to give, and she delivered it in her own unique way.

Her integrity and commitment was not limited to family and friends. Patsy was also devoted to her work, customers, and coworkers. In the real estate world of Newport many would agree she was one of the hardest working and always looked out for her customers' interests first. In her professional life, Hazel was a local real estate industry leader and a proud member of The National Association of Realtors, The Rhode Island Association of Realtors and The Kent Washington Association of Realtors. Having been the catalyst to, and cornerstone of, Slocum Realty based in Warwick she was very highly respected by both her office family, her colleagues throughout Rhode Island, and those she came to know so well across the country through her leadership efforts. When people asked what Hazel stood for the answer was always simple, ethics, fairness and commitment for everyone she and Slocum Realty had the privilege of helping and working with. To Hazel, both personally and professionally, it always came down to one simple premise: right or wrong, there was no gray, no flirting with the truth, you did the right thing every time, and she would never hesitate to let anyone know it is as simple as that. Tough, fair, committed, loving, and unwavering. Many would tell you that even those tough meetings usually ended with a hug and assurance that “everything was going to be alright”.
