NFIP Extension Passes House - Needs Senate Approval

July 26, 2018...Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed legislation to authorize the National Flood Insurance Program until November 30th of this year. The bill now needs to pass the Senate by its expiration date of July 31st. “Flooding is the most common and costly natural disaster in the United States,” said Elizabeth Mendenhall, National Association of Realtors president. “Without an extension of authority, the National Flood Insurance Program cannot write or renew flood insurance in 22,000 communities nationwide.” “The bill passed by the House today ensures the program remains available to those Americans who rely upon it, while enabling Congress to continue working toward a long-term reauthorization and reform measure,” Mendenhall said. Though a short extension is a promising first step, members of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) have been lobbying for a long-term extension and reform of the program which protects thousands of homeowners where private flood insurance is hard to come by or non-existent. Realtors, if you haven't taken part in NAR's call-for-action, now is the time. Click here to take action.
