A Message from RI Dept. of Health re: RI Rental Registry

Published Tuesday, November 19, 2024

Following the launch of the Rhode Island Rental Registry, many property owners have inspections scheduled or have already had their lead inspection. Many of these property owners may need to address lead hazards identified during their inspection, before they can pass an inspection and get a lead certificate. Property owners should know that this work is regulated by RI Department of Health (RIDOH) and may need to be done by a licensed lead professional. Property owners can learn more about fixing lead hazards and what work they can do themselves on the RIDOH website.

Please help getting the word out to property owners to only hire licensed lead professionals. A list of licensed professionals can be found on the Department website

Also, initially landlords could not evict a tenant for non-payment of rent if not in compliance with the registry. Due to a backlog of lead inspections, landlords looking to evict for non-payment but not yet in compliance, can file this affidavit with the court.

Please also review this new fact sheet to help property owners prepare for and understand the Lead Hazard Mitigation Inspection.
