On February 19, 2025, the Board of Examiners for Electricians unanimously voted to issue an interpretation to clarify that home inspectors and others who are not licensed as an electrician can legally use “plug-in receptacle testers and testing buttons on GFCI receptacles “because these activities do not involve direct testing of the wiring.” The Department of Labor and Training has posted this official information on its web site: Read the full memo here.
This is a positive update but the Board still interprets the law to prohibit home inspectors from opening and inspecting electrical panels.
To learn more about this issue and home inspections in general, register for three-hour Home Inspection continuing education course on March 18th from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Experienced home inspector Paul Brunetti is the instructor.
