To address a lack of affordable housing in Providence, a Housing Crisis Task Force presented its findings to the Providence City Council in late September.
The 2025 report raises a variety of housing challenges in Providence and recommends a number of solutions. Unfortunately, one of the recommendations is that the City of Providence impose rent stabilization, another name for rent control. This would “cap annual rent increases at the lower of either a set percentage or the annual change in the Consumer Price Index” and punish landlords who do not comply.
A rent stabilization ordinance is expected to be filed in the near future.
The Rhode Island Association of REALTORS® worked with other organizations to oppose and defeat rent control legislation at the State House earlier this year.
