New Law: Discrimination Based on Section 8 and Other Sources of Income Prohibited

On April 15, 2021 Governor McKee signed a new law that prohibit housing discrimination based on the buyer’s or tenant’s “lawful source in income.”  The law went into effect on the same day that it was signed. Rhode Island now joins Connecticut, Massachusetts, and a number of other states that lower the barriers for holders of vouchers and other forms of assistance to find housing.

Inventory Shrinks Further in R.I.’s Housing Market

Warwick, R.I. – April 15, 2021 -- Today, the Rhode Island Association of Realtors announced that in terms of supply, the start of the 2021 home selling season has been the leanest on record. With just 1192 single-family homes on the market in Rhode Island, the current inventory is approximately 25 percent less than the previous monthly record low of 1594 in the spring of 2002.

Rules about Rentals and Section 8 Vouchers

Is it legal for a landlord to refuse to rent to a rental applicant because he or she has a Section 8 voucher? At this point, yes.  However, the Rhode Island House and Senate recently approved legislation that would prohibit discrimination based on an applicant’s lawful source of income, bringing Rhode Island one step closer to our neighbors in Connecticut and Massachusetts who already prohibit such discrimination.
