As the devastation of Hurricane Harvey unfolds, local REALTORS® have stepped in to help with a two-pronged approach to aid those in need.
First, the Rhode Island Association of REALTORS® and State-Wide Multiple Listing Service, in cooperation with Rhode Island’s five local boards of REALTORS®, have collectively donated $10,750 to the REALTORS® Relief Foundation, a national foundation established to help families who have endured unimaginable loss.
The REALTORS® Relief Foundation is currently coordinating efforts for relief in the gulf coast cities and in the greater Houston, Texas area due to the unprecedented flooding left by Hurricane Harvey. In addition to their own donation, REALTORS® across the state are encouraging the public to join them in contributing to this worthy cause.

“A few years back, many Rhode Islanders suffered from massive flooding and we saw the impact on families firsthand. It wasn’t just a news story. It hit home. We know how much our relief efforts helped at that time, thanks to the numerous acknowledgments and thanks from the recipients of our donations. It’s our duty to do the same thing for Texas,” said Brenda L. Marchwicki, President of the Rhode Island Association of REALTORS®.
Marchwicki further explained that donations are not the only way to help those affected by the flooding. Hurricane Harvey hit at a time when REALTORS® across the country are fighting to ensure the reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) which is set to expire on September 30th of this year. The program provides necessary flood protection and coverage for 5 million policy holders in 22,000 communities nationwide. Without Congressional action, the program will lapse adding confusion and uncertainty for current and future NFIP policyholders. REALTORS® nationwide are contacting their representatives in Congress and urging passage of HR 2874, the 21st Century Flood Reform Act. The public is encouraged to join them.
“Even if you’re not in a position to donate, it doesn’t cost anything to reach out to your representatives in Congress to ask them to support the 21st Century Flood Reform Act. We can offer immediate release to those in Texas with an infusion of donations and long-term relief by helping to ensure that necessary protections are in place in the event of these horrific national disasters,” said Marchwicki.
Contributions to the donation noted above include $2500 from the Rhode Island Association of Realtors, $2500 from the State-Wide Multiple Listing Service, $2500 from the Greater Providence Board of Realtors, $1000 from the Northern Rhode Island Board of Realtors, $1000 from the Newport County Board of Realtors, $1000 from the Kent-Washington Association of Realtors, and $250 from the Rhode Island Commercial and Appraisal Board of Realtors. Collectively, they represent more than 5000 Realtors statewide, many of whom are also donating individually.
