As a reminder, starting on January 1, 2024, real estate licensees who are working as independent contractors are required to register once per year with the RI Department of Labor and Training or when switching brokerages. The intent of the law is to prevent misclassification of workers as independent contractors for purposes of workers’ compensation.
Independent contractors can file the DWC-11-IC Designation of Status as an Independent Contractor electronically or download a PDF here. When leaving a brokerage, file a DWC-11-R Notice of Withdrawal of Designation of Independent Contractor online form. There is no cost to register, as a result of the advocacy efforts of RIAR and other business organizations.
The law requires the RI Department of Labor and Training to send a list to the Division of Taxation by April 1st each year, to help the state determine whether independent contractors are filing their taxes.
