1. Scammers have been sending fake emails pretending to be from staff and/or members of RI REALTORS®. Just a couple of the most recent scams include an offer of a free piano and a "secure" message including an RI REALTORS® Annual Report from our President. Both are fake emails. 

Please be sure to confirm that the sender's name matches their email address and if you have any doubts, don't open attachments or links, or share personal information.

Report suspected scams to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center and the United States Secret Service’s Providence office at 401-331-6456.

2. Recently, the Norwich, CT Police Department has urged the Eastern Connecticut Association of REALTORS® (ECAR) to inform REALTORS® about a “prospective buyer” who contacted a brokerage in Stonington after seeing a local listing sign and expressing interest in viewing million-dollar homes. One of the female agents showed him several properties. During these viewings, suspicions arose when his stated budget increased from $800,000 to $4.9 million. The agent later discovered that the “buyer” has a record of sexual assault charges, forgery felonies, and is on the State of CT Sex Registry. 

The Norwich Police Department believes it is crucial for members to be aware of suspicious behavior when working with customers. Follow safety protocols to prevent potential harm to yourselves and others.
