New RI REALTORS Accessibility Guide

The Rhode Island Association of REALTORS® has released a new accessibility guide to help members better understand common home accessibility features and modifications that can support aging in place and independent living. The guide is intended to provide REALTORS® with practical information they can share with consumers who may be looking for more accessible housing options or considering modifications to their current homes. It also provides guidance on how REALTORS® can assist clients with accessibility needs who may not be able to physically access a property during an initial showing, including identifying potential barriers and discussing accessibility features remotely. Accessibility features such as ramps, widened doorways, grab bars, stair lifts, and first-floor living spaces are becoming increasingly important as Rhode Island’s population ages and more consumers seek homes that can accommodate changing mobility needs.

Members should also be aware of the Rhode Island Livable Home Modification Grant Program administered through the Rhode Island Governor’s Commission on Disabilities. The program may reimburse eligible Rhode Islanders for up to 50% of the cost of qualifying accessibility modifications, up to $4,500. Eligible improvements may include ramps, accessible bathrooms, chair lifts, widened doorways, and other safety or accessibility upgrades that help individuals remain safely in their homes. Additional information about the program is available through the Rhode Island Governor’s Commission on Disabilities.
