What is the GRI designation?
In today’s competitive business environment, it often takes more than just motivation and initiative to succeed. The Graduate, REALTOR® Institute (GRI) designation is accredited through the National Association of REALTORS® and is a powerful tool to attract and build new business.
GRI designees:
- Have pursued a course of study that represents the minimum common body of knowledge for progressive real estate professionals.
- Have developed a solid foundation of knowledge and skills to navigate the current real estate climate—no matter what its condition.
- Act with professionalism and are committed to serving their clients and customers with the highest ethical standards.
Additionally, all RI REALTORS® GRI courses count towards RI license renewal and, can be applied to the 90-hour requirement to obtain a broker’s license in RI.
Earning the GRI designation at RI REALTORS®
Courses that make up the RI REALTORS® GRI curriculum are valid for 5 years and do not need to be taken in any kind of order.
In order to successfully complete the GRI designation program, you must fulfill these requirements within 5 years of beginning the program. Courses do not need to be taken in any kind of order.
- Complete the 18 ‘CORE’ GRI courses (modules GRI-101, 102, 201, 202 and 301)
- Certain RIAR eLearning courses on Docebo may be substituted for select classes. Please email [email protected] for additional information.
- Complete a minimum of 15 hours from any of the GRI elective courses*
- Any GRI elective that is a NAR designation or certification course that was taken elsewhere may be approved by issuing a certificate of completion
- Must be a member of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® and maintain that membership to retain the designation.
- Notify [email protected] once completed.
- Make $20.00 payment to RIAR Professional Development.
Once these requirements have been completed your status as a GRI designee will be reported to the National Association of REALTORS® at which time you can use your GRI designation on all personal promotional material. RIAR will also provide you with a complimentary plaque and GRI pin.
You may have even taken a GRI class without realizing it! If you’ve taken RIAR classes within the last 5 years and would like a transcript please fill out the GRI Transcript Request form.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do I have to complete GRI?
To earn the GRI, all courses must be taken within 5 years. If your courses go beyond 5 years, you will need to retake anything outside of the 5 year period.
Are you able to test out of GRI modules?
Equivalency examination may be granted for GRI-101 at a cost of $65.00 if you have been in the business at least one full year. There is no CE for taking the equivalency exam in lieu of the course.
Are exams required per module or once all modules have been completed?
As of 2020, examinations are no longer required.
Do courses need to be taken in order?
Courses do not need to be taken in any order. Modules serve as a grouping for topics.
There are GRI courses no longer on the list, do they still count?
Courses that were part of the previous GRI track will still count and can replace another CORE class or count as a GRI elective.
I previously completed a GRI module before the changes to the courses, do they still count?
If you’ve already completed the courses within the previous modules, you will still be considered as having completed the module. If you would like to take the newly added courses to a module you’ve completed, you may do so and count those as GRI electives.
Do electives taken with other schools count?
Only NAR Designation/Certification courses can count provided it is within the 5-year window. In order to count those, you first need to complete all other required courses, and then submit those certificates to [email protected].
